Stancija Vergotini Near Poreč Has Streets Named after the Famous Local Women

The naming of the streets in Stancija Vergotini will improve the quality of life of the locals, and the problems related to mail delivery, finding tourist accommodation for tourists in the settlement, as well as the quick arrival of emergency services to citizens’ calls to residential addresses, will become a thing of the past.

The request was initiated by the Mate Balota Local Board in February 2021, and the commission came up with a proposal at the session on July 15, 2022, according to which almost all streets (16 of them) in the settlement would be named after famous Croatian, Istrian and Poreč women.

This is how journalist Ana Rukavina, ballerina Carlotta Grisi, writers Lina Galli, Ivana Brlić Mažuranić and Marija Jurić Zagorka, actresses Alida Valli, Marija Crnobori and Laura Antonelli, pianist Ivana Lang, opera singer Milka Trnina, archaeologist and politician Vesna Girardi-Jurkić, historians Mirjana Gross and Vanda Ekl, philanthropist Katarina Kliman and teacher Giuseppina Martinuzzi got their streets in Stancija Vergotini. There is also the De Vergottini family, which, like benefactor Anna Maria Smocovich, got its own square. One of the streets that runs along the route of the former Poreč narrow-gauge railway, Parenzana, was named after her.

In this way, the residents of Stancija Vergotini expressed great importance to the role and work of women in the past, present and future. With this gesture, the city of Poreč is the only city in the Republic of Croatia in which one district bears the names of women, exclusively.
