Ancient Paving Revealed at the Marafor Square in Poreč
For the purposes of creating the conservation study of the arrangement of Marafor Square in Poreč, preparatory work for the necessary archaeological research began last week.
Yesterday, a part of Decumanus towards the Marafor was discovered, which confirmed the previously unknown connection, that is, the connection between Decumanus and the forum. A drainage side channel was also found.
On the south side of the Marafor square, the original ancient flagstone of the Roman forum is clearly visible, very well preserved and uniform, while in the middle of the square there is a pool, a probable remnant of a medieval cistern built in the 15th century, which is confirmed by the literature. Several skeletons from a later period were found, which are associated with the church of St. Juraj, which was located not far from the square, explained Gaetano Benčić from the Local Museum of Poreč.
