Poreč Advent 2023: Lighting of the First Candle

As the holiday season unfolds, Poreč welcomes the enchanting glow of the first Advent candle on Saturday evening. Join us on December 2nd at 6:45 PM on the main square (Trg slobode) for a brief but heartfelt ceremony marking the beginning of Advent. Organized by Advent Poreč and the local parish, this event promises an evening of celebration, combining song, prayer, and a special performance by the students of “Advent Candles”.

Advent Tradition in Poreč

The lighting of the Advent candle holds great significance, symbolizing the four weeks leading up to Christmas, known as Advent. Each week, a new candle is lit on the Advent wreath. The first candle, called “postilica” or the prophet’s candle, represents hope and anticipation. The second candle, “pomirilica” or the Bethlehem candle, signifies peace. The third candle, the shepherd’s candle, celebrates joy and happiness. Finally, the fourth candle, illuminated on Christmas Eve, is the angel’s candle, bringing the message of love.
