Latest News on Euphrasian Basilica’s Revitalization
The restoration of the Euphrasian Basilica continues this year with the completion of the roofing of the sacristy and the southern nave of the church. This collaborative effort involves the City of Poreč, the Croatian Conservation Institute, and the Poreč Museum.
The restoration of the sacristy roof included comprehensive work on the roof structure, sheet metal, and covering, ensuring its stability. Additionally, the roofing of the southern nave underwent refurbishment, enhancing the durability of this architectural landmark.
Previously, the bell tower underwent comprehensive restoration in the summer of 2020, followed by the completion of necessary project documentation. Last year, the roofing structure above the baptistery was restored, allowing for detailed inspections and conservation-restoration research.
During these investigations, remnants of a monumental Latin inscription were discovered, embedded in a fine layer of plaster. Although not visible to visitors due to their height, conservation-restoration work was undertaken to protect parts of the mosaic in the archaeological zone of the northern complex.
The Euphrasian Basilica, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, is one of the best-preserved examples of early Christian architecture globally. To continue this restoration project, the mayor proposed and secured an amendment to the state budget, allocating €150,000 for the endeavor.
The ongoing restoration project includes further research, documentation, conservation-restoration work, and structural repairs, ensuring the preservation and presentation of this historic site for future generations.
